Omega 7 Buckthorn Oil

This product is an extract from the berries of the Sea Buckthorn, a Himalayan plant widely used in traditional oriental medicine. It contains the Omega 7 monounstaturated fatty acid, similar to that found in foods such as olive oil, almond oil and avocado. It also contains small amounts of omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids.

Omega 7 helps to maintain healthy mucous membranes.

Mucous membranes can be thought of as your bodies internal skin. It is the thin skin lining all body cavities and canals that come into contact with the air, examples are nasal passages, eyelids and mouth, qesophagus, intestines and your urino-genital tract.

Mucous membranes are usually moist tissues that are bathed by the bodies sectretion, such as saliva and vaginal fluids.

Under certain circumstances the body fails to produce enough of its own secretions and the mucous membranes can become dry.

Omega 7 may stumlate dry mucous membranes to begin producing their own secretions once again.

It helps protect mucous membarnes against damage by free radicals, which may lead to ulceration of the digestive tract, and dryness of the genital tract lining (particlularly in menopausal women), the eyes and the mouth.

Promotes tissue regeneration and anti-inflammatory action in the skin and mucosa.

Contains naturally occuring plant sterols which may help to reuce cholesterol.

Does it work?

i) Healthy mucous membranes/vaginal dryness: The benefits of omega-7 PUFAs in maintaining healthy mucous membranes, and in reducing vaginal dryness in menopausal women have been reviewed by Yang & Kallio (2002).

(ii) Skin inflammation: A randomized controlled trial has demonstrated the benefit of supplementation with sea buckthorn on symptoms of patients with atopic dermatitis (Yang et al, 1999).
