Black Cohosh
Also known as:
Cimicifuga racemosa, Squaw root.
This is a member of the Buttercup family, originally used by the Native American Indians (who gave it the name ‘squaw root’) for its effect on ‘normalising’ the female hormones. In modern phytotherapy, Black Cohosh is used for problems associated with the menopause.
The mode of action of the herb in the treatment of menopausal difficulties is not clear. It seems to act both directly on the tissues of the reproductive system and indirectly through the nervous system.
Black Cohosh contains several important constituents. One group of constituents acts to reduce the concentration of Lutenising Hormone and in turn, decreases the relative balance of progesterone in favour of the oestrogens. At the same time, another group has been found to act directly on oestrogen receptors.
Black Cohosh provides a natural source of salicylic acid. This may account for some of the beneficial effects seen with painful menstruation during menopause.
The standardises Black Cohosh providing 1mg triterpene glycosides, recognised active ingredients of this traditionally used herb. Standardised herbs guarantee a consistent quality and potency in every tablet.

Does it work?
There are many who have used Black Cohosh successfully for releivng hot flush sysmptoms of the menopause. However, there are no clear clinical studies to prove the effect, although some study results suggest that black cohosh may help relieve menopausal symptoms, other study results do not. Studies of black cohosh have yielded conflicting data, in part because of lack of rigor in study design and short study duration (6 months or less).
